What are the Most Common Mattress Sizes in the UK?
If you are looking to buy a new mattress, you are probably wondering what the most common sizes are. You might have seen this information in reviews or on the side of mattresses, but it can be useful to have some idea ahead of time and plan around bedroom space before making any decisions.
The most common size of mattress is a UK single which measures approximately 3ft by 6ft (90cm x 190cm). Single beds are typically used in guest rooms or a child’s bedroom.
There are also several other commonly available UK mattress sizes including double size bed (4ft x 6ft or 137cm x 190cm) and King size bed (5ft x 6ft o 150cm x 200cm). Double beds are typically used in children’s or teenagers’ bedrooms and sometimes as guest beds while King size beds are used in adults rooms or shared bedrooms for couples.
At Urbansuite, we start our range by offering the following standard UK mattress sizes:
Single mattress size
A single mattress is usually a mattress that is not as wide as a double mattress and not as long as a king-size mattress. Single mattresses often come with bed frames and can be used on their own or with other mattresses to create any kind of bed arrangement. The standard single mattress size in the UK is 90cm x 190cm.
Single mattresses are the most common size in the UK, with many households combining two together to form a double bed. They can be more affordable than double bed sizes and can be used in creative ways in a bedroom as they take up less space than a double or king size bed. Single mattresses and beds are often a great choice for growing children and teens.
Small single mattress size
The smallest-sized adult mattress we provide is the small single, which is the same length as a standard single mattress, but a little narrower, with the standard size being 75cm x 190cm.
Small single mattresses are a great option for a spare room that needs a bed but would be tight on space even with a standard single mattress, or can be a good choice for growing children or teenagers if their room won’t comfortably accommodate a standard single bed.
The difference is only 15cm in width – even this small change can make it much easier to furnish a small room without it feeling too cramped.
Small double mattress size
A small double mattress is the same length as a standard double, but not quite as wide, with the typical width of a small double being 120cm and a standard double being 137cm wide.
The difference is small, but it may be enough to allow another piece of furniture, such as a wardrobe, to fit more comfortably within the room.
Small doubles are a good choice for a guest room or small bedroom where space is limited but you need a bigger bed than a single, either to accommodate more than one guest or just for some added comfort.
Small double mattresses are also sometimes referred to as ‘three-quarter’ mattresses.
Double mattress size
A double mattress is another common size for beds and mattresses in the UK, they’re ideal for two people, especially if your bedroom isn’t a massive size. The standard double bed size in the UK for a double mattress is 137cm x 190cm.
While designed to accommodate two people, many people who sleep alone prefer the extra space and comfort of a double bed over a single bed, so a double can be a good choice for a guest room if you have the space.
Our double mattresses are made from organic materials which are both supportive and comfortable so you can sleep better at night.
Queen mattress size
Queen mattresses are slightly wider than the king-size mattress, measuring 160cm x 200cm, or 5’3″ x 6’6″. This mattress size is a good choice for those who want a larger mattress than a king provides, but don’t want or don’t have the room for a superking.
What we have categorised as a queen mattress is sometimes also referred to as a European queen mattress. It’s important to note that some brands use the term queen mattress to describe a small double. Make sure to check the dimensions of the mattress you are buying, rather than just assuming the size based on the name.
King size mattress
A king size bed is usually a little longer and wider than a double bed, making it the perfect choice for tall people who need extra leg room, as well as those who want more room to stretch out, even when sharing the bed with a partner. It can fit up to two people comfortably – the standard size in the UK is 150cm x 200cm.
It’s a good idea to check the inner dimensions of the bed frame so you know for sure it will fit your mattress.
It might sound obvious, but you should always buy a mattress that fits the size of your bed. A smaller mattress may not be the right choice for a bigger bed because it may not provide enough support for your body.
Also, keep in mind that a king size mattress and bed might struggle to fit in smaller bedrooms.
Superking mattress
Superking size mattresses and beds are 180cm x 200cm. These are some of the biggest beds we have available, and they’re great for families who enjoy plenty of space to drift off to sleep, as well as for those of you who just value lots of room!
Our superking size beds are a little more expensive than our king size beds, but we think they’re worth it. They are more comfortable, and there’s no doubt about it – a superking size bed is more spacious than a king size bed.
A superking bed is best used in the master bedroom, where there will be the most space to accommodate it, but it is important to check the dimensions of the room first, along with any other furniture you want to include.
Emperor mattress
The emperor bed is not a common bed because it’s very large. The standard UK size for an emperor bed is 200cm x 200cm, making it the largest mattress size on our list.
It’s difficult to get into smaller homes and apartments, making it more suitable for larger houses, villas, or mansions where you can easily transport the mattress to the bedroom of choice.Â
However, if you are looking for a mattress that provides the most space, then this is the best mattress for you. Two people sharing an emperor mattress will have plenty of room to stretch out.
Mattress Depth
How we measure the depth of our mattresses
The mattress depths stated on our website are approximate and are measured at their fullest point. The mattress is placed on a flat firm surface with a straight measure placed on top. The depth provided is the measurements between these points. Please refer to the illustration shown. If you have any queries on our sizing, contact our team on +44 (0)330 363 9981.
The depth of each individual mattress can be found in the technical information on each mattress page.
How to Choose the Right Mattress Size
We’ve all heard of the saying “you can’t make a pancake bigger than the pan.” The same principle applies to mattresses. You need to measure your bed, and then purchase a mattress that is at least as long as your bed plus an inch or two.
There are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing a mattress, whether it’s for a single bed, double bed or a superking size bed.
- First, you want to keep in mind the size of your bed – the mattress dimensions should align with the size of your bed frame. This is not always an easy thing to do, as many beds and mattresses are not standard sizes so always measure your bed frame accurately before making a decision.
- Second, you want to know whether or not your mattress will need a box spring or if it will be OK on just the slats that go from headboard to footboard for support instead. You may need a box spring if you intend on getting a larger mattress or one that is heavier than your current mattress.
